Bogota, Colombia – BYD is proud to announce that it has once again won an order for 596 pure electric buses in Colombia. This follows the 64 units delivered to Medellin in September 2019, and 470 units delivered to Bogota in December 2020 respectively, as well as a successful bid for another 406 buses in December 2020, bringing the total number of vehicles ordered to more than 1,500. Such thousand-unit scale bus orders are expected to help to build the world’s largest pure electric bus fleet outside of China. BYD will continue to work with its partners to jointly contribute to green transportation and economic development in Colombia.
Like the previous order for 406 buses, this batch of 596 buses was publicly tendered by the Bogota City Public Transport Authority (TRANSMILENIO SA). The Italian power grid company (Enel) and the energy giant Vitol Group both respectively adopted BYD’s integrated E-bus solutions to bid and successfully won the tender.
BYD will partner with Colombian bus manufacturer BUSSCAR DE COLOMBIA S.A.S (or BUSSCAR) on bus body parts. BUSSCAR is the first bus body manufacturer in the country to obtain the ISO 9001: 2000 standard certification, with more than 20 years’ industry experience.
This batch of buses is scheduled to be delivered from 2021 to 2022 and will be put into operation on 19 bus routes across 3 regions of the capital. By then, hundreds of thousands of residents along the routes will be able to enjoy quiet, safe and emissions-free transportation services. It is expected that the 596 buses will reduce 15,850 tons of carbon dioxide and 3.2 tons of particulate emissions each year during their 15-year contract period, effectively improving local air quality and enhancing Colombia’s ability to respond to climate change.
“Colombia is a leader in Latin America’s electric bus sector. We have recently completed the bidding for 1,295 pure electric buses, of which 1,002 buses will be provided by BYD,” said Maria Fernanda Ortiz, head of the Public Transport Authority of Bogota. “Assembling them in Colombia will not only help boost the national economy by creating jobs for the local community, but also improve the quality of transportation services, cut carbon emissions, and improve the environment.”
“As the world’s leading new energy vehicle manufacturer, BYD overcame all difficulties, essentially bucking the trend by relying on its all-round strong capabilities to gain the trust of its partners, which helped us win big orders in Colombia, including the thousand-unit scale orders,” said Lara Zhang, the regional director of BYD Latin America.
“We hope this order represents a completely new starting point that pushes forward the rapid development of green transport in Latin America, and promotes the coming era of electrified public transportation worldwide.”
Since BYD entered the Colombian market in 2012 it has made several breakthroughs, including building Latin America’s first pure electric taxi fleet during 2013, entering Bogota’s BRT system in 2017, and delivering 64 electric buses to Medellin in 2019. Despite the pandemic, BYD successfully delivered 470 pure electric buses to Bogota in December 2020, BYD successfully delivered 470 pure electric buses to Bogota in December 2020, and then went on to win orders for fleets of 406 in the same year as well as 596 buses recently.
Today, the footprint of BYD’s zero-emission vehicles has spread across major Latin American markets including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador, Panama, Costa Rica, Uruguay and Barbados, and is winning market acclaim for its remarkable environmental benefits and reliable quality.
