BYD, world’s leading bus makers, together with its partner Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL), has been helping New Zealand speed up the 2050 carbon-neutral progress.
In June, the Warren Buffett backed Chinese green tech giant BYD and ADL, announced the 18 BYD ADL Enviro200EV electric buses operated in New Zealand now have completed over 1 million kilometers in operation, helping to cut more than 1,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
These 18 electric buses included 8 electric buses operated by Fullers360 on Auckland Transport services in Waiheke Island, 5 buses in Tauranga, 3 in Christchurch, and 2 trial buses operated by Auckland Transport in its central business district. Working with ADL, BYD introduced the country’s first fully electric bus service in 2019, with more on order as the country prepares to fully decarbonize its public transport bus fleets by 2035.
The biggest carbon reduction has been achieved by the fleet of initially six, later eight, electric buses operated by Fullers360 on Auckland Transport services in Waiheke Island, which have prevented the emission of 300 tonnes of CO2 in just eight months.
NZ Bus saved 290 tonnes with five buses in Tauranga and Ritchies 270 tonnes with three buses in Christchurch, while the two trial buses that Auckland Transport has been using in the central business district have cut out 140 tonnes of CO2 emissions since their launch in 2018.
The BYD ADL Enviro200EV electric bus stands at a length of 11-meters and can carry 37 passengers within a range up to 300-400km on a single charge. Backed by BYD’s reliable battery and power transmission systems technology, these pure electric buses meet local market demand for large capacity, long battery life, and zero carbon emissions.
New Zealand has been actively promoting policies to deal with climate change. The country is preparing to fully transition its bus fleets to zero-emission vehicles by 2035 as part of a wider set of measures intended to help meet the country’s 2050 carbon neutral target.
“Although our fleet of electric buses is small by international standards, as we approach World Environment Day it is heartening to see their contribution to tackling the global challenge of climate change,” said ADL’s General Manager for New Zealand, Tony Moore. “Their continued impact will be further amplified as we deliver more and more electric buses here in New Zealand, working closely with our partners Kiwi Bus Builders and BYD Australia.”
“As a pioneer in electric vehicles, we have delivered electric buses to many cities in New Zealand together with ADL,” said Wing You, BYD’s General Manager for Australia and New Zealand. “We would like to help the local government speed up the transition to zero-emission electric buses by 2035, and we look forward to working closely with ADL to get more new buses in more New Zealand’s cities.”
At present, BYD is successfully serving markets in many other countries across the Asia-Pacific, including Nepal, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Australia, India, and more. Globally, the brand’s pure electric vehicles cover over 400 cities, operating in more than 80 countries and regions.
